PEN Protesta! Blog #4
Written by Marian Botsford Fraser, Chair of the Writers in Prison Committee, PEN International
Here is my statement from the PEN Protesta! event in Mexico City, 29 January 2012:
The global community of writers witnesses from afar the pain, the shock, the despair that the people of Mexico are immersed in, every single day. We hear deafening silences— the silence of those killed or disappeared, the silence of those threatened and intimidated. But also, the silence of empty rhetoric— officials, politicians, bureaucrats, busily, noisily saying all the right things, but doing nothing. Sound and flurry, signifying nothing.
So, five simple questions to the government of Mexico:
¿Por qué? ¿Dónde? ¿Qué? ¿Cómo? ¿Cuándo?
WHY have there been so few arrests, so few trials, so few convictions?
WHERE is the will to stem the corruption of officers and officials?
WHAT will you do to address this infamous culture of impunity?
HOW will you ensure the right of freedom of expression of your citizens?
WHEN will the killings stop?
