Kings College slam poetry evening

In celebration of World Poetry Day English PEN held an event called Human Writes! and was held at The Gallery Cafe in Bethnal Green, East London on 21st March. Students, London poetry fans, and people from the local community attended. It was hosted by a poet Werd Pley, who shared his poems and thoughts on free speech with us throughout the evening. Megan Beech (2011 SLAMbassador and a KCL English PEN rep) gave a fifteen minute opening performance, and flash fiction performer Femi Martin gave another 15 minute performance half way through the evening. Slam poets from across London took to the stage and shared their words in the three minute competitions lots. Nicole Walsh (a slam first-timer!) scored highest and went home with an English PEN goody bag. In the interval, attendees wrote messages of support to two imprisoned Chinese poets – Liu Xiaobo and Shi Tao. Liu Xiaobo is the only Nobel laureate currently in detention, and both of whom are currently serving prison sentences of over a decade in violation of their right to free expression. We also raised funds for English PEN.
