Catalan PEN to organise Deletrix exhibition showcasing work of photographer Joan Fontcuberta
On November 12 Catalan PEN, with the generous contribution of the photographer Joan Fontcuberta, 2013 Hasselblad Award Winner will hold an exhibition on the importance of fighting for freedom of expression at the Santa Monica Arts Centre in Barcelona.
DELETRIX: Fanaticism, censorship: preserving the dogma without any breach, limiting freedom of thought and expression. Suspension of language. Opaqueness of words, prohibition of knowledge, threat to intelligence. Gestures of aggression – unnecessary, useless – filtered through time: referring to the plasticity of artists such as Pollock, Tapies or Mathieu. Does violence redeem aesthetics?
WHAT IS DELETRIX
Book and exhibition by Joan Fontcuberta, award winning photographer, which will take place on November 12, 2013 at Santa Monica Arts Centre in Barcelona. DELETRIX exhibits direct examples of censorship on written texts throughout history, reminding us the importance of fighting for freedom of expression.
WORDS AGAINST CENSORSHIP
Over the last six years, Joan Fontcuberta (Barcelona,1955) has been collecting images of censored texts by different authors over different periods of time, from a variety of European and North American libraries and archives.
With these images as a reference point, Joan Fontcuberta and the art critic Manel Guerrero, shaped the idea of producing an artistic project on censorship with the direct implication of the Catalan PEN.
