About Us
PEN Kenya Centre is an association of writers that was founded in 2003 having spent a long time struggling with the government to be given official status. PEN Kenya draws membership from all qualified writers; poets, essayists, novelists, playwrights, journalists, short story writers, students, teachers, university dons, editors, illustrators, and publishers. PEN Kenya promotes literature and defends freedom of expression. PEN Kenya is an affiliate member of PEN International, the world’s oldest association of writers headquartered in London, UK, and which enjoys consultative status at the UN and UNESCO. To achieve its goals, PEN Kenya organises lectures, seminars, exhibitions, workshops, readings, book launches, panel discussions, periodic publications, and other activities incidental to or necessary for the execution of PEN’s objects. The Centre organises literary forums for visiting writers. PEN Kenya is an active member of PEN African Network (PAN). The Centre welcomes partnerships and collaborations with local and international institutions to carry out its programmes and activities.
