Every year, PEN International receives many more requests for support than we have capacity or resources to respond to. These requests come from writers all around the world. In many cases they tell of heart-wrenching circumstance.
Sometimes writers and their families or loved ones are persecuted or censored or otherwise threatened. Sometimes their livelihoods are at risk, and sometimes their publishers or lawyers are also in danger. In some cases, even their lives are at risk.
As we reach the end of another year of grave and growing threats to free expression worldwide – in longstanding authoritarian contexts, and in countries traditionally viewed as democratic where rights are now being eroded – we must reach out again to our friends and supporters to ask for their solidarity and practical help.
Today, we struggle more than ever to raise enough funding to deliver our core work helping writers at risk, in prison, exiled, or even stripped of their citizenship because of their writing.
We do this through solidarity, campaigning, high-level advocacy at bodies such as the UN, and practical interventions such as emergency support and relocation to safe countries.
As Black Friday grabs attention, and as thousands spend their hard-earned cash on items or services that they might not otherwise buy, if not for promotional discounts, we ask you to consider making a gift that truly matters.
