Write Against Impunity 2012: Interview on Mexican television with Danish PEN’s Jens Lohmann

Danish PEN’s Jens Lohmann was interviewed about PEN International's campaign Write Against Impunity 2012 and about PEN’s work for ‘Todas las Voces’, a Mexican television programme. Jens spoke at length about the campaign and about the attacks of journalists in the region. You can watch the interview below. We’ve collected some of his comments here:

On Write Against Impunity 2012 –

The important thing is that writers express their anxiety, that they denounce through their texts what is happening with impunity to writers and journalists in Latin American countries, Mexico, Honduras, Brazil…

On Mexico –

Representatives from PEN [and other organizations] met with high-ranking government officials; through campaigning we achieved the federalization of crimes against journalists…but now the federal authorities are facing the big challenge – implementing this law. If they don’t, we’ll never take the words of the Mexican seriously again…

This prosecutor [the special prosecutor for crimes against freedom of expression] has taken up very few cases. And I believe that only one case has been resolved…

On Honduras –

If we take into account that Honduras is small, with 6 million inhabitants, the statistic for the murders of journalists and writers is much higher than in Mexico…

On Brazil –

Who are responsible for the murders of journalists? It’s organized crime and public officials, or ex-public officials, who are connected to organized crime in those areas [the border areas where most killings take place].

On PEN –

We have 91 years of history. We have a very important tradition that we don’t give up while these case remain unresolved. I know that that sounds like a threat, but it isn’t a threat – it’s a promise.
