PEN International’s recent partnership with Secret Cinema at their sold-out run of ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ saw hundreds of audience members writing more than 500 letters of support for our Day of the Imprisoned Writer focus cases.

At their latest production of ‘Shawshank Redemption’, Secret Cinema created a space where audiences could write letters of support for PEN’s focus cases. This year they were: Shiva Nazar Ahari (Iran), Ericson Acosta (Philippines), Muharrem Erbey (Turkey), and Eskinder Nega (Ethiopia).

The letters include messages of support and solidarity for these unjustly incarcerated writers, such as appeals to the governments responsible for the writers’ imprisonment. These letters will be delivered to their respective Embassies, urging for the writers’ prompt and rightful release.

Secret Cinema’s production of ‘Shawshank Redemption’ will re-open from 10th January – 12th February 2013 as a Future Cinema project.
