Sierra Leone PEN: School Club Members Attend International Writers’ Workshop in USA
Five members of the Sierra Leone PEN Centre school clubs aged fourteen to sixteen are currently participating in an International Writer’s workshop for students at Brooks School, North Andover, Massachusetts, USA.
The two week workshop is an extension of an online creative writing course which was attended by students from HLD High School and Brooks School in Massachusetts along with Sierra Leone PEN school club students. The course, Creative Writing and the World: HLD High School and Brook School LEAP to PEN Sierra Leone, was organized by Iowa University as part of its International Writing Programme.
The online course was a highly successful programme which created a platform for the students to get to know each other through their writing, and ultimately inspired the Brooks School students to raise money to fund five PEN students to visit their school.
During their time in Massachusettes, the Sierra Leone PEN students have been on local cultural orientation tours and taken part in social events, technology assessment sessions and five days of writing workshops. Their remaining time will be spent on trips to the seaside, mountains and lakes, and a tour of Boston.
This is a tremendous opportunity for students from both countries to develop their writing skills, make personal connections with fellow young writers and gather a variety of perspectives on the world.
