PEN Kenya organised a literary tour of the Coastal City of Mombasa early June 2011 to facilitate creative writing workshops and public lectures. The focus of the literary excursions was: first with secondary schools students and their teachers on the craft of writing, the need to inculcate early reading culture among students, and encourage careers in writing; secondly, there were public lectures to celebrate the literary and cultural heritage of Mombasa, the Kenyan coral island. PEN Kenya is planning to continue the project in three new provinces (Rift Valley, Western, and Nyanza) in the future. PEN Kenya in collaboration with Kenya National Library Service will invite 10 schools from each province to send language and literature students with two teachers from each school to take part in the workshops. In addition, panel discussions and public lectures will be delivered at Moi University, Eldoret, in Rift Valley; Masinde Muliro University, Kakamega, in Western; and Maseno University, Kisumu, in Nyanza.
