For 90 years PEN International (charity registration no. 1117088) the worldwide association of writers based in 145 Centres in 102 countries, has worked to defend freedom of expression and promote literature.
We defend persecuted writers, campaign for the rights of linguistic minorities, develop and deliver literacy and education programmes across 5 continents, hold literary festivals with a freedom of expression focus worldwide and bring contemporary fiction from different cultures to readers everywhere

PEN International is supported by a number of individuals, companies and organisations. They all have in common the belief, shared by PEN International, that every individual has the right to write, read and speak freely. We have many longstanding supporters; some sustain specific areas of our work such as the Writers in Prison Committee and campaigns for freedom of expression; the Free the Word! festival; or the work of our regional programmes. Some support core operations such as communications and administration, both of which are vital in helping to make connections across all areas of our work around the world.
