The United Nations (UN), the world’s largest international organisation, aims to facilitate co-operation in international law, international security, economic development, and social equity. Founded in 1945 at the signing of the United Nations Charter by 50 countries, it replaced the League of Nations founded in 1919. There are currently 193 United Nations member states.

PEN’s UN advocacy work to protect freedom of expression and promote literature is largely focused on the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and UNESCO.
