World Press Freedom Day 2026: Demand the release of Ukrainian journalists in Russian captivity

At least 26 Ukrainian journalists are currently being detained by the Russian authorities in conditions that amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.

As the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine rages on, the international community must step up efforts to secure the immediate and unconditional release of all detained Ukrainian journalists and hold perpetrators to account.

Protecting Imprisoned Writers

Each year, PEN International marks the Day of the Imprisoned Writer to highlight writers jailed or persecuted for their words and to mobilise global solidarity for their release. From 15 November, we take action for individual cases that exemplify the urgent threats to freedom of expression.

Protecting Linguistic Rights

We are committed to the respect of all languages, and the protection and promotion of indigenous or minoritised languages.
