Campaigns

Every day, countless writers are detained, harassed, persecuted or even killed for the practice of their profession.
We will not let their voices be silenced.

We raise awareness of their cases, campaign against abuses and lobby governments for imprisoned writers’ release. We demand investigations into cases of torture, disappearances, and killings. We show solidarity, provide encouragement and hope to persecuted writers and their families. By harnessing the power of our members and supporters, we work for a world where the right to freedom of expression is respected everywhere.

Day of the Imprisoned Writer

Each year, PEN International marks the Day of the Imprisoned Writer to highlight writers jailed or persecuted for their words and to mobilise global solidarity for their release. From 15 November, we take action for individual cases that exemplify the urgent threats to freedom of expression.

This year, we stood in solidarity with four courageous voices: Rory Branker (Venezuela), Yalqun Rozi (China), Mohamed Tadjadit (Algeria), and Mzia Amaglobeli (Georgia).

Defending Linguistic Rights

We are committed to the respect of all languages, and the protection and promotion of indigenous or minoritised languages. Our campaigns, projects and events around the world highlight the importance of mother language education and translation as a means of spreading the unique culture of every language.

Every year on 21 February, PEN International joins other organisations advocating for linguistic rights via International Mother Language Dayto promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

Protecting Women Writers

PEN International marks International Women’s Day (8 March) by championing women and gender-diverse writers facing persecution, upholding our Women’s Manifesto, and challenging censorship, imprisonment, and violence against women in literature.

Our campaigns often focus on taking action for specific writers, including Gulgeş Deryaspî, Meral Şimşek, and Amanda Echanis.
