Day of the Dead 2025: No one Guaranteed Their Safety
On 31 October, to mark the Day of the Dead (31 October – 2 November 2025), PEN International, Amnesty International, ARTICLE 19, PEN San Miguel, PEN Guadalajara, PEN Chiapas Pluricultural, and English PEN will hold a vigil to honour the memory of journalists killed in Mexico for their work. This act of remembrance is also an urgent appeal: violence against the press in Mexico has reached alarming and persistent levels. The organisations urge the Mexican State to strengthen its Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, ensure impartial investigations into attacks and killings of media workers, and take concrete measures to guarantee that journalists can exercise their right to freedom of expression without fear of reprisals.
Join us in solidarity to honour those silenced and to stand for freedom of expression worldwide.
Vigil Date: 31 October 2025 Time: 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM Location: Mexican Embassy, London

Identity on Trial: Persecution and Resistance
PEN International is proud to launch Identity on Trial: Persecution and Resistance – its Case List 2025, which highlights the increasing persecution of writers based on their identity. This year’s report documents the alarming rise in censorship, imprisonment, and threats faced by writers due to their gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or religious beliefs. It underscores a disturbing global trend: those who dare express their identity or challenge dominant narratives are being silenced through legal threats, censorship, and violence.
